Michael Manheim taught Shakespeare and modern drama at the University of Toledo, before retiring to Vermont. He is the author of  Eugene O'Neill's New Language of Kinship (1982), as well as many papers, articles and reviews on Shakespeare and O'Neill.  He was editor of the Cambridge Companion to Eugene O'Neill (1998) and Vital Contradictions: Characterization in the Plays of Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekhov, and O'Neill (2002). He was a past President of the Eugene O'Neill Society. Michael Manheim died on January 5, 2011.
