Eugene O'Neill - A Glory of Ghosts
American Masters Series
Broadcast: PBS - 1986
Director: Perry Miller Adato
Documentary and dramatic techniques are freely combined to tell
the story of the life and work of Eugene O'Neill. Scenes from
eight O'Neill plays are dramatized by an all-star cast that
includes Jason Robards and Geraldine Fitzgerald in Long Day's
Journey Into Night, Tony LoBianco in The Hairy Ape,
and Blythe Danner as Anna Christie. These dramatic
excerpts serve to illuminate O'Neill's life and complex
personality and testify to his consummate dramatic ability. When
combined with documentary materials, they fuse reality with art,
enabling us to see for ourselves the alchemy by which the
playwright transformed the one into the other. Read by actor
Jeffrey De Munn, Eugene O'Neill's own words help to narrate the
story. |
