ALL GOD'S CHILLUN GOT WINGS was written at the request of George Jean Nathan for the first issue of THE AMERICAN MERCURY, a new magazine Nathan was co-founding with H. L. Mencken as a successor to THE SMART SET. However, as the play grew in length (it was originally conceived as a one-acter), O'Neill found that he could not meet the deadline for a January, 1924 appearance. The play was subsequently published in the second issue of the magazine.
