In late 1927, Liveright decided to put out a ten dollar illustrated edition of THE EMPEROR JONES. Alexander King was selected to illustrate the volume based on drawings he had made while traveling in Africa. King later illustrated special editions of THE HAIRY APE and ANNA CHRISTIE.
