Five years of study by this critical husband and wife team of the NY Times went into this truly monumental volume of over 1,000 pages.  All of O'Neill's life and works is treated in considerable detail, and when it appeared, this was the definitive biography.  The appearance of the first half of Sheaffer's biography has altered the picture somewhat, but the Gelb effort must remain among the most significant undertakings of its type.  Somewhat distracting are critical opinions of the plays introduced somewhat gratuitously from time to time, but the overall efect is excellent, if a little overwhelming.Miller
