Louis Sheaffer - Barbara Burton Papers

Louis Slung was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. Somewhere along the line he changed his surname from Slung to Sheaffer, which he amusingly called his "pen" name, referring to the famous fountain pen company. Sheaffer became the press agent for José Quintero's production of The Iceman Cometh at the Circle in the Square in 1956, and he was also the press agent for the first New York production of Long Day's Journey into Night. These events provided the galvanizing impetus for Sheaffer's decision to write a biography of Eugene O’Neill.

The first volume, O’Neill, Son and Playwright, which takes the reader to 1920 and the New York premiere of Beyond the Horizon, was published in 1968 by Little, Brown & Company. The second volume, O’Neill, Son and Artist, was published in 1973 and was awarded the 1974 Pulitzer Prize for biography. Sheaffer died in 1993 at the age of 81.

Among the important figures in the O'Neill story with whom Sheaffer became friends and corresponded was Barbara Burton, the daughter of the playwright's second wife, Agnes Boulton O'Neill. When Burton died at the age of 95 on April 10, 2009, she left behind her correspondence with Sheaffer. There are over 450 letters dating from 1957 to 1992, most of them either original letters from Sheaffer to Burton or carbons of letters from Burton to Sheaffer. Contained in these documents is a wealth of information relating to O'Neill and his legacy, as well as a rare insight into the lives of two very private individuals.

Sheaffer remembers seeing several photo albums on a visit to Point Pleasant nine years earlier, but all seem to have disappeared.
