To Richard Madden

West Point Pleasant, N.J.
January 17, 1919.

My dear Mr. Madden:

I am enclosing the signed agreement to you herewith.

Glad to know that you are to call on Williams today and hope you will be able to pry something definite out of him.

My two copies of "Beyond The Horizon" are being read by friends just at present.  I'll get one back within a day or so and will send it to you at once.  I'll be very eager to learn your opinion when you have read it.

All of my one-act plays which they find suitable are usually produced first by the Provincetown Players, of which organization I am a member, as you probably know.  Of course, with them there is no question of royalty or contract of any sort.  Our theatre is frankly experimental and try-out.

Of past short plays five are at present under contract - four to Lewis and Gordon via the W.S.P. bankruptcy;  and one, "Ile", to the Greenwich Village theatre.  Included in the L. and G. property is "In The Zone" which played all last winter on the Orpheum circuit and also the first part of this - till influenza - on the U.B.O.  Lately it appears to have lost favor and the booking seems to have stopped entirely, due to the end of the war, I presume.  Two of the L. and G. plays which the W.S.P. failed to produce, and which L. and G. surely will not put on, will again become my property April first.  Do you care to look over any of these agreements to see if there is anything in them you would like to take up?

There is an E. A. Weil, Fulton Theatre Building, who has copies of four plays.  He intends, he told me, to start a short play theatre something after the style of the Princess under Holbrook Blinn some years ago.  Do you know of Weil or anything about his project?

After any of my new one-act plays is produced at the P.P. I will send you a copy and then refer all inquiries to you.  Is that the dope?

With very best regards,

Very sincerely yours,

Eugene G. O'Neill.
